He graduated from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) in 2002 and earned a Master’s degree from Central European University in Budapest in 2003. He later received his PhD in philosophy from NaUKMA in 2008 and a doctorate in political studies from the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris in 2011. Since 2009, he has been teaching political philosophy and the history of ideas at his alma mater, the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
Volodymyr Yermolenko is the current (2025) President of PEN Ukraine and Director of Analytics at Internews Ukraine, one of the country’s leading media NGOs. He is also editor-in-chief of UkraineWorld.org, a multilingual platform that explains Ukraine’s politics, society, and culture to international audiences. In 2023, he became Chair of the Board at the International Renaissance Foundation (part of the Open Society Foundations) and joined the board of the Ukrainian Institute.
His journalistic work is rooted in Ukraine’s independent media sector. He hosted Hromadske.World, a geopolitics and international affairs program on Hromadske TV, and currently co-hosts two acclaimed podcasts: Explaining Ukraine (in English), which covers current events and wartime analysis. In 2020, he and Tetiana Oharkova launched the Kult podcast, dedicated to key epochs and figures in cultural history.
He is a laureate of the Yuri Shevelyov Prize (2018) and the Petro Mohyla Award (2021).
Yermolenko’s commentary and essays have appeared in international media such as Le Monde, Financial Times, Die Welt, Newsweek, EUobserver, Atlantic Council, and Euractiv. He is frequently interviewed by global outlets including BBC, CNN, France 24, Al Jazeera, and The Economist, offering expert insights into Ukraine’s democratic struggles, cultural history, and philosophical traditions.

- Ukraine in histories and stories. Essays by Ukrainian intellectuals (2019) — The book is a collection of texts by contemporary Ukrainian intellectuals: writers, historians, philosophers, political analysts, opinion leaders. The texts have been written for an international audience.
- Understanding Ukraine: Tracing the Roots of Terror and Violence (2023) – Edited by Marieluise Beck. Foreword by Dmytro Kuleba. Сontributor alongside Timothy Snyder, Serhii Plokhii, and others, examining the roots of violence in Ukraine from the Holodomor to the current war. This anthology tackles the complex history of terror and violence in Ukraine – from the millionfold starvation of the Holodomor to the changing occupation regimes, from the ’Shoah by Bullets’ to the Chornobyl disaster. Those ready to delve deeper into the checkered, painful history of the country will better understand Ukraine’s current quest for independence, freedom, and democracy.
These publications have earned him the Yuri Shevelyov Prize and positioned him as a leading intellectual voice in Ukraine and beyond.

Автор долучився до написання поряд із Тімоті Снайдером, Сергієм Плохієм та іншими, досліджуючи коріння насильства в Україні від Голодомору до сучасної війни. Ті, хто готовий глибше зануритися в строкату й болісну історію країни, зможуть краще зрозуміти нинішнє прагнення України до незалежності, свободи та демократії.
Володимир Єрмоленко є постійним учасником міжнародних фестивалів та форумів, зокрема Львівського книжкового форуму (у партнерстві з Hay Festival) та Київської бієнале, де ділиться своїми думками про демократію, дезінформацію, культуру та інтелектуальний опір.
